In the mighty bulk of Windsor Castle lies the country’s main claim to the title of ‘Royal Berkshire’. Windsor Great Park, part of the royal hunting forest which once covered much of the county, spawls around the castle walls; and Eton College lies directly across the River Thames. Upstream is the village of Cookham, immortalized by the painter Stanley Spencer, and among the leafy backwaters is office of Keeper of the Royal Swans.
Yet Berkshire is in no way trapped by its pedigree heritage. Windsor, for example, has one of Britain’s leading modern safari parks, while Reading, the bustling county town, has museums devoted to the lives of the common people in times gone by. To the west, the downland surges to nearly 1000ft of Inkpen Hill.
