Thomas Hardy is one of the most famous novelists and poets in English Literary history, he set all his major works in the area of Wessex, which he based on the county of Dorset. It was in Dorset that he was born and spent most of his life, the landscape of this county remains much the same as it was in his time and visitors can experience what inspired him to write his novels.
A group tour of Hardy’s Dorset will take you through the towns and villages that inspired his novels and poems, the places where he lived, including the thatched cottage, ‘Hardy’s Cottage’ where he was born near Dorchester and wrote some of his early novels and also Max Gate the house which Thomas Hardy designed himself and where he wrote his most famous novels; Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure.
Thomas Hardy is buried in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey.
