Thomas Hardy set all his major works in the area of Wessex, which he based on the county of Dorset. It was in Dorset that he was born and spent most of his life, the landscape of this county remains much the same as it was in his time and visitors can experience what inspired him to write his novels. The thatched cottage where he was born and wrote some of his early novels is owned by the National Trust and can be visited on a tour of Dorset.
