Opened in 2019 it’s fast becoming a must see on any garden tour of South West England. This Castle Carey country estate with limestone buildings the vibrant colour of burnt orange has magnificent woodlands and gardens for visitors to explore.
The main house, now a hotel, is the beautiful Palladian fronted Hadspen House, first built in 1687 and home for two centuries to the Hobhouse family. Penelope Hobhouse the legendary designer created an Arts and Crafts garden there in the 1970s and wrote her first book The Country Garden, about it.
Set within a large working estate close to fashionable Bruton its stunning gardens have been entirely replanted and redesigned by French architect Patrice Taravella.
It’s also a working farm with cider pressed freshly on site. There are daily tours and seasonal workshops on vegetable growing, pruning trees and shrubs, flower pressing and even a mushroom masterclass.
The Garden Café is set above the kitchen gardens with views to orchards below, from which a vegetable-led menu is sourced.
We create bespoke private garden tours for many groups following their horticultural passions throughout Southern England. To include the Newt in your itinerary, find out more information or receive a no obligation quote please get in touch.
