The West Country of England has always attracted poets and writers with its evocative landscapes and stunning scenery. The North Coast of Cornwall around Padstow inspired John Betjeman, while further south along the coast near the tin mines of St Agnes and Perranporth, Winston Graham took his inspiration for his Poldark novels.
Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Jamaica Inn’ is set on Cornwall’s Bodmin Moor, whilst her novel ‘Frenchman’s Creek’ is set on the wooded creeks of the Helford River on the south coast of Cornwall. The quaint fishing village of Fowey and area along the River Fowey is where Du Maurier lived and inspired her to write.
The popular novelist Rosamunde Pilcher has strong connections with the north coast of Cornwall near to St Ives, where the film version of her novel ‘The Shell Seekers’ was filmed. Agatha Christie is associated with Torquay, South Devon which is her birthplace and where she lived for most of her life and wrote many of her famous crime novels. This area known as the ‘English Riviera’ is the place to discover Christie and enjoy her work, every year there is an Agatha Christie Festival and a Literary Trail. Whatever your taste in literature the South West of England has something to offer groups with different interests.
