The famous novelist Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812. The terraced house where he was born is now a museum and has been beautifully restored to show how it would have been when he lived there.
Overlooking the harbour of Broadstairs, Kent is Bleak House once home to Charles Dickens and where he wrote David Copperfield. Originally called Fort House the house overlooks Viking Bay and was where Dickens spent many summer holidays in the 1850s & 60s. Bleak House is now a luxury wedding venue.
Any Charles Dickens Literary tour should include a visit to Doughty Street in London, what was his family home is now the Charles Dickens Museum, you can see where he lived with wife and children and where he wrote some of his famous books such as; Oliver Twist, Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickleby. The house is a typical terraced Georgian one, Dickens only lived here for a couple of years before moving on to much grander residences but it is the only one of his houses in London that has survived to this day.
Charles Dickens is buried in Poet’s Corner, Westminster Abbey.
