Cornwall’s main theatre venue reopened in 2021 after a three-year refurbishment costing more than £26m. Truro’s Hall for Cornwall, in the 175-year-old Grade II listed former city hall building, now offers a bigger auditorium, and remodelled throughout. It aims to attract 300,000 people a year, adding an estimated £35.6m to Cornwall’s economy in the next five years and creating 165 jobs.
The project has seen the building completely renovated to accommodate a new, larger three-tier auditorium – the Cornwall Playhouse – able to host bigger and more elaborate shows. Capacity has increased from 965 seats to more than 1300, and there are more public spaces, bars and cafes throughout the building.
A new co-working space called Husa (Cornish for “to create an illusion or dream”) will open to “nurture and support Cornish performance artists and the creative industries”. And Cornwall Playhouse Productions is a new entertainment producing company for developing productions and co-productions both within Cornwall and beyond.
The theatre’s debut production was a musical about Cornish sea shanty group Fisherman’s Friends.
