Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick repeated that the event in Cornwall is an “important national gathering” and should go ahead in person rather than be moved online, depsite the rise in cases due to the Indian variant of Covid-19.
The G7 Summit, set for 11th-13th June, will see world leaders include US President Joe Biden and Germany’s Angela Merkel visit Carbis Bay near St Ives. He insisted that “proper precautions” were being put in place to ensure the spread of Covid-19 would be curbed with a “far-reduced cast list” of advisors and media.
Speaking on Times Radio, Mr Jenrick said: “That’s been carefully thought through as an important international gathering, there will be a far-reduced cast list to the usual numbers of people coming to these gatherings and proper precautions are being put in place to make sure that those people who do come are being tested regularly and so on, and of course these things are always kept under review.”
The major three-day international event will see leaders from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, as well as invited leaders from Australia, India, and South Korea attend. It could also be Joe Biden’s first trip to the UK as President of the US.
It will welcome leaders from countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and, this year, even invited leaders from Australia, India and South Korea.
