The Cotswolds roll across the eastern half of Gloucestershire, and from their honey-coloured limestone has wrought a wealth of lovely towns and villages, such as Bibury, Chipping Campden and Bourton on the Water. At Hidcote Manor, Barnsley House and Westbury Court are some of the country’s most pleasing gardens.
In the Forest if Dean, old iron workings can be seen at Clearwell Caves and Puzzle Wood, and a heritage centre tells the story of the Forest folk who grazed their stock in the glades.
The county has many relics from the Roman times. The Roman villa at Chedworth is exceptionally well preserved, and at Cirencester the Corinium Museum has fine mosaics. Busy Gloucester city on the banks of the River Severn is dominated by its fine cathedral, a superb example of the Perpendicular style that began in the 14th century. There is elegance of a different period at Cheltenham, where Regency architecture abounds and the town’s famous sap water can be tasted n the Pittville Pump Room.
A brutal episode from Gloucestershire’s heritage is evoked in the murder room at Berkley Castle, where Edward II was killed. There are gentler attractions at the Wildfowl Trust nature reserve at Slimbridge, at Bourton n the Water’s model village and motor museum, Cotswold Farm Park and Westonbirt Arboretum.
