One of the best ways to discover Cornwall’s Heritage and to discover information about your own ancestors is to visit one of Cornwall’s many museums on a group tour of the South West of England. Here is a selection that you might want to include on your tour;

Geevor Tin Mine is one of the many museums where you can learn about what life was like for Cornish tin miners. This is the largest preserved tin mining site in Europe and is part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Sites. You can visit the above ground buildings and go down into the 18th C mining tunnels.

The Royal Cornwall Museum is in Cornwall’s only city, Truro. It is an excellent place to start your discovery of Cornwall. The Geological Collections of minerals, rocks and fossils are amongst the finest in the world. The Natural History Gallery has an impressive collection of local plants, fungi and insects native to Cornwall. As well as local collections and information there is an Egyptian mummy and many other artefacts from around the world brought back to Cornwall by travellers and explorers.

The Museum of Cornish Life in Helston gives a fascinating insight into the social history of Helston and the Lizard Peninsula. The Museum is housed in the town’s historic Market Buildings, spread over 3 floors there are thousands of objects, some dating back to the earliest settlers on the Lizard and then right up to a fully stocked 1950s kitchen. The Museum give the visitor the chance to see what life must have been like in Cornwall through the centuries.

The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is the place to discover Cornwall’s maritime heritage. This award-winning Museum is spread over 5 floors including the 100ft high tower with wonderful views of Falmouth Harbour.
