Travel trade experts from around the world are visiting a selection of the UK’s top tourism destinations next week in major push by VisitBritain to boost international visitor numbers. Those from the USA will head to Cornwall for a three day educational trip between 14th-16th March taking in a selection of the best that we have to offer. The publicity around the G7 in St Ives last year is thought to have been pivotal in the choice of destination, which was driven by the operators themselves.
After two difficult years for the inbound industry, as a result of Covid, tourism bosses are keen to attract visitors back as travel restrictions are eased. The coordinated trips will start this weekend with all the teams spending time in London visiting a series of new attractions to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Followed on Monday by a high profile launch presentation at The Shard in central London before the specially organised trips around the country get under way.
Organised by VisitBritain, in conjunction with Destination Management Companies such as Cornwall DMC, 50 international travel trade buyers will arrive this weekend for a series of educational visits. Canadian buyers will explore the West Midlands, Germans the Cotswolds, while the French contingent will head to Kent. Other teams from Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and the Netherlands visit locations in Wales, Northern England and Scotland.
VisitBritain deputy CEO Patrica Yates said: “Working with the international trade, ensuring they are ready to sell Britain, is crucial to driving back bookings and spending. We also want to broaden travel itineraries, encouraging visitors to stay longer and explore further, and boost visits across the shoulder season, supporting local businesses, destinations and economies.”
The trips will reinforce VisitBritain’s latest £10m marketing campaign, ‘Welcome to Another Side of Britain’ designed to support the visitor economies of cities. Additionally British Airways have announced a partnership with VB in a 3 year agreement to promote the UK globally with an emphasis on the US market.
